Chapter 15 · 15.2
Can't log in: code, password or rate limiting
Logging in to your WebOké Nextcloud takes two steps: first your username and password, then a code. Where does it go wrong? Find your situation in the table.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Wrong login or password. | Check your username and whether Caps Lock is on. You can also log in with the email address of your account. Check that you're on the right address: your own Nextcloud, or free.webokecloud.nl for Nextcloud Free. Forgotten your password? See below. |
| The code by email doesn't arrive | Check your junk mail folder and check which email address is set in your Nextcloud profile. If you've set up an authenticator app or backup codes, use those instead. See The email login code: how it works and what to do if the email doesn't arrive. |
| A message about too many incorrect login attempts, or a Too many requests page | Your address is being rate limited after too many failed attempts. The cause is often an app with an old password. See below and Multiple invalid login attempts: why you're being slowed down and how to fix it. |
| This account is disabled | The owner of the package has disabled your account. Ask them to re-enable your account in My WebOké (Creating, editing, disabling and deleting users). |
| You've lost your phone with the authenticator app | Use a backup code. If you don't have one, read Lost your phone or lost 2FA: here's how to get back in. |
Forgotten password
- On the login screen, click Forgot password? and enter your username or email address.
- You'll receive an email with a link to create a new password. This email is sent to the email address in your Nextcloud profile. If no address is set there, no email will arrive.
- No email arriving? Ask the owner of the package for a new password. They can set it in My WebOké under User Management with Change password (Creating, editing, disabling and deleting users). If you're the owner yourself, you can do this there for your own account too. With Nextcloud Free, only Forgot password? works: also check your junk mail folder.
Read more about your password in Changing or forgetting your password.
Your address is being rate limited
After a few failed attempts, Nextcloud makes you wait longer and longer before you can try again. This protects your account against intruders. It's not a permanent block: it will lift itself automatically.
Usually, it's not you yourself, but a device that keeps trying to log in with an old or incorrect password. Think of the calendar app on your phone, Thunderbird, an old desktop app or a network drive. So first do this:
- Find the device or app with the old password. Tips for finding it are in IP address throttled by an old app: which one is it?.
- Set an app password there, or log in again via the app itself. With two-factor authentication, your regular password doesn't work in apps. See App passwords: when and how to use them.
- Have the rate limiting lifted. Log in to My WebOké, open the AI Centre and ask the AI assistant to lift the rate limiting on your Nextcloud. You'll get a card and click the button yourself. This works for the address you're currently connected with. If it doesn't work, contact support.
Please note: if you lift the rate limiting without first replacing the old password in your devices, you'll be locked out again within a few minutes.
